FIGURE ID AND LEGEND

As with tables, figures are numbered to differentiate them from other figures, charts, graphs, and illustrations within a work. Figure ID citations or references are set in roman and are in lowercase. These can be in-text or parenthetical citations.

e.g.
In-text citation:             The divisions are shown in figure 1.

Parenthetical citation:   This correlates with previous studies (see figure 1).

In cases where a figure has multiple parts, these should be assigned a letter.

e.g.
figure 1A
(figure 1A)
Note that the letter identifier should be italicized and set in uppercase.

A figure legend is a short description of what a figure shows. Figure legends are also set in bold and should be in sentence case.

e.g.
Figure 1. Projected progress of the department from 2010 to 2016

*Note that the figure ID and legend are separated by a period. A period is also not needed at the end of the legend.
